ABOUT US

The Mathematics Club was founded by two students whose curiosity led them to an interstate competition, where they represented Pune as the only engineering participants. Their experience and the appreciation received from the panel inspired the question, "Why not others?" Collaboration with faculty members during early event planning naturally evolved into the formal establishment of the club. Today, the club is dedicated exclusively to pure mathematics and guided by the motto "Apply and Innovate."

HISTORY OF MATHEMATICS

Aryabhata (476-550 CE)

Aryabhata was one of the earliest Indian mathematicians and astronomers. Wrote the famous book Aryabhatiya. Calculated value of π (pi) accurately. Explained Earth rotates on its axis. Developed methods for solving quadratic equations

Brahmagupta (598-668 CE)

Brahmagupta made major contributions to algebra. Wrote Brahmasphutasiddhanta. First to give rules for zero and negative numbers. Worked on quadratic equations

Bhaskara II (1114-1185)

Bhaskara II, also known as Bhaskaracharya, was a great mathematician and astronomer. He wrote the famous mathematics book Lilavati and made important contributions to algebra, arithmetic, and early concepts of calculus. He also explained ideas related to gravity long before Isaac Newton.

Madhava of Sangamagrama (1340-1425)

Madhava of Sangamagrama founded the Kerala School of Mathematics. He developed infinite series for sine, cosine, and π, and his work later influenced the development of calculus.

Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887-1920)

Srinivasa Ramanujan was a self-taught mathematical genius from Tamil Nadu. He made remarkable contributions to number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions, and collaborated with G. H. Hardy at University of Cambridge. He is known for concepts like the Ramanujan Prime and the Ramanujan Theta Function, and in India, National Mathematics Day is celebrated on his birthday (22 December).

C. R. Rao (1920-2023)

C. R. Rao was a world-famous statistician known for the Cramér–Rao Bound. He made major contributions to statistical theory and was awarded India's Padma Vibhushan.

Harish-Chandra (1923-1983)

Harish-Chandra worked in representation theory and algebra. He made important contributions to harmonic analysis, and the Harish-Chandra Research Institute is named after him.

Shakuntala Devi (1929-2013)

Shakuntala Devi was known as the "Human Computer." She could solve complex calculations mentally, entered the Guinness World Records, and actively promoted mathematics education.

Manjul Bhargava (1974-Present)

Manjul Bhargava is a modern Indian-origin mathematician. He is a professor at Princeton University, won the Fields Medal in 2014, and works in number theory.

ACTIVITIES

AI WORKSHOP

RMC (RSCOE Mathematics Club) hosts guest lectures and many student led lectures on machine learning and application of pure mathematics. Mentors provided a detailed and beginner friendly introduction to ML and how it's used. It provided students with a meaningful opportunity to connect mathematical theory with modern, applied problem-solving.
